Yellow Ball "2 on 2" Challenge is a fun and
competitive event that will inspire our players to improve their
singles and doubles match play thru a team format.
The goal of the challenge is to assist players with improving
singles and doubles strategy while learning the important aspects of
becoming a good "team player." Many of our high school players are
finding themselves playing singles during the regular season and
teaming up with a partner for the sectional tournament at the end of
the season. Other players are trying out to make a team based on
singles ability, but then are required to play doubles all season for
their high school team. The ability to play both singles and doubles
provides options for players and coaches.
- Creating a 2-person team makes it easy for players to
participate and yet encourages the team concept. Teaming up with a
friend is often times less threatening for many players. It also
presents the opportunity for players to learn to bond with a partner,
creating lifetime friendships and learning valuable life lessons.
- The primary goal of the format is to place emphasis on
playing matches and working together. If we teach this concept to
children from the time they are young, it will strengthen the level of
high school tennis as well as college tennis.
Format
- Players choose a partner and enter the Challenge.
- Each player plays singles and doubles. Teams will submit a
lineup to the Tournament Director prior to the start of the team match
to determine who will play #1 singles and #2 singles. Players must play
according to strength.
- When the singles matches are over, partners will play the
opposing team in doubles. For court usage, while these two teams are
playing their doubles, a different set of players can play their
doubles first, followed by their singles.
- Singles and Doubles matches are an 8-game pro set with
regular scoring. (a 12 point tie breaker will take place at 8-8) Keep
in mind that the goal is to encourage players to play matches. If an
alternate scoring method needs to be in place, the format can be
flexible. Examples would be; no-add scoring, 6 game sets. (tiebreaker
at 6-6) This exception would apply more for a camp setting then a
formal Challenge event at a club.
- At camp, players will compete in the "2 on 2" Challenge
each day. Players will be assigned a different partner each day. The
record of wins and loses are determined for each player individually,
with one win/loss awarded for each set in both singles and doubles. At
the end of the week, the winner will be determined by the person with
the most wins in their flight. During camp a score sheet will be will
posted online to record players win/loss record.
- If you are running the "2 on 2" Challenge as a one day
event and players enter the Challenge with a partner and remain with
that same partner throughout the event, the winners can be determined
as a team rather then individually. The points are determined the same
way, win/loss record. The total number of wins that both people on the
team have accumulated will be added together. The team with the most
wins will determine the winning team.
- If a tie occurs at the end of the entire event, "Super
Serving Sudden Death Playoff" will take place. Each player will be
permitted to serve 10 serves to the deuce court and 10 serves to the
add court. The player with the most number of serves "in" wins. If the
tournament is run as a team event, keeping the same partners
throughout, then each player of the team will participate, scores will
be added together and the team with the highest number of serves "in"
will determine the winner.
Throughout the summer, entries for the Yellow Ball "2 on 2"
Challenge 2008 Championships will be distributed. A site, date and time
will be announced on our web site. Players can enter the challenge as
long as one player attended a Yellow Ball Tennis Camp during the summer.
Divisions will
be as follows:
13 and under recreational division
13 and under competitive division
14 and over recreational division
14 and over competitive division
Level will be determined by the division that the camp player
was placed in at camp. Age will be determined based on age the event
starts.
